Cambridge University Research on Reading Jumbled Words

Word Jumble is a great activity to introduce case sentences and information technology allows students to call back about sentence structure.

Information technology appears in several activity books and I have come up across it in various grade books too. In '5-minute activities' (Penny Ur & Andrew Wright, Cambridge Academy Press) it is chosen Jumbled Sentences. I've known it as Word Jumble.

I have used this action a few times and I have tried several different ways of presenting it. Information technology tin can be a useful activity as a first step to introducing key phrases or a dialogue.

BOARD WORK

Give-and-take Jumble can be a good cypher-prep action, yous only need a few sentences. The sentences can exist original, they can be taken from a form volume, or they can be a way to introduce corrections. All you need a board and something to write with.

Word Jumble in a filigree

Divide the lath into a grid. I accept divided the board into quarters in this instance, considering I accept four example sentences. At that place is a number in the bottom right-paw corner to indicate the number of sentences inside the square (a number one circled in carmine ways there is 1 sentence).

Word Jumble - Quarters
Case of Discussion Jumble in a grid.

The Activity: Students piece of work together in pairs or small groups to order the words and reconstruct the sentences. Inquire the students to alter pairs (or move betwixt groups) and cheque their answers. Finally, ask the students to arrange the sentences into a dialogue or to create a role-play based where they must use these phrases.

Discussion Jumble using unlike colors

If you lot have dissimilar color markers or chalk, write each sentence in dissimilar color. The about difficult part of using the whole board is writing the words in a random gild. The reason for this is if students do detect y'all writing, you can't block the area and they may notice the order of the words.

Word Jumble - Colors
Example of Word Jumble using different colors.

The Activity: Students work together in pairs or pocket-size groups to order the words and reconstruct the sentences. The activeness is the same as above but you can assign a color to a pupil or group.

For case: If the class is divided into groups of iv, each person in that group is given a colour. The groups so work together to reorder their sentence. If pupil A is bluish, ask them to think the blue judgement. If educatee B is greenish, inquire them to remember the greenish sentence.

Extension Action: One way to help students call up their 'lines' is to erase one or two of the words on the board. Ask the groups which words are missing.

HANDOUTS

In that location are other ways of presenting this action, only it requires a modest corporeality of preparation before the class. You need to know which sentences you lot are going to introduce and how you want to introduce them.

I recently created an Excel file to arrive easier to produce the handouts that I wanted.

Click on Word Jumble Template to download the Excel file.
Lookout the video beneath for a cursory introduction on how to apply the template.

Caution: Only delete the sentences in the boxes. Do not delete the words from the tabular array.

When you open the Excel file, don't write your words in the table merely in the boxes provided near the bottom of the sheet called 'Sentences'. When you have written your sentences, sort the individual words in the table and print the handout of your choice.

There are three styles of handout that you could apply: cards, a worksheet and give-and-take tabs.

Word Jumble on cards

I use this format quite often. It generates a lot of speaking because they can be used every bit a dictation exercise and it uses a lot of checking language.

Word Jumble - Cards
Example of a Word Jumble Card – The upper part showing the jumbled words and the lower office showing the answer.

The Activeness: Students work in pairs or small groups. Student A picks upwardly a card and reads the words (in the incorrect gild) to Educatee B. Student B writes downward the words they hear and tries to put the words in the right club. Writing some useful phrases on the lath can really help.

Tin can yous give me a little help?

The offset word is…, The second word is…, The third give-and-take is…

Is there any punctuation? (This tin can be useful for higher level students)

Punctuation refers to the marks and symbols used in writing. For instance:. (period) , (comma) ; (semi-colon) : (colon) ' (apostrophe) ! (exclamation mark) ? (question mark) - (hyphen) _ (underscore)

Extension Action: Ask the students to retrieve of substitutions (alter the example sentence to something new)

Give-and-take Jumble on a handout

There are 2 ways to use this handout. The beginning way is to write out a complete judgement in a random order (below) or write 3 or iv words and enquire students to write a judgement that connects them.

Word Jumble - Sentences
Example of a Word Jumble Handout – The jumbled sentences with space beneath them for students to write the answers.

The Activity:Divide the course into pairs or small groups and ask the pupil to reorder the words. The sentences can exist used to introduce a function-play, a story, interesting facts, or statements that can be expert, discussed or debated as a class.

Word Jumble on tabs

This template can be used in a number of ways. One way is to write a set of 20 words that are related. (It's a quick way to produce a set of vocab cards.) Another way is to use this template for long sentences. The longer the sentence is, the more fourth dimension is takes to reorder. In this example, it is meliorate to use fewer sentences.

Word Jumble - Tabs
Example of Give-and-take Jumble Tabs – Each word is copied onto a split up tab.

The Action: Use the template to split the words onto private cards and ask the students to work in pairs or groups and arrange the words into a sentence.

Variation: Scatter the words around the room and enquire the students to collect them before they arrange them into sentences.

These are only five ideas for presenting this activity. I promise it'southward been useful.

Do you have any other ideas for presenting this activity? Leave a annotate and let me know.

Take care!

Afterword: The template has been protected to avoid any formulas being accidentally deleted. If you want to edit the file though, you can unprotect information technology. Go to file(Excel 2013) and y'all volition see something similar to this.

Unprotect sheets

The blue writing on the right-hand side says 'unprotect.' Click on it and the sheet will go unprotected, so you will be able to edit whatever prison cell. Changing the protected cells may touch how the template works.

This video by ExcelisHell talks about how to extract text from a cell.
